Matsuri | Fine Japanese Dining in the Central Valley

"Fresh fish in Citrus Heights?" we hear you asking. Absolutely. Prepared correctly, sushi can be a work of sublime art to both the eyes and the tongue. There's nothing quite like the taste of a fresh piece of sea bass or salmon artfully combined with special rice and a hint of wasabi.

Husband-and-wife team Brenda and Scott Kim, who opened up Matsuri in late 2000, are there almost every day of the week and help make every customer feel at home. Intimate dining room seats 30 with additional seating available at the sushi bar. Brenda, as hostess, oversees the servers and seating with efficiency and charm. Scott is often behind the sushi bar, tending to orders himself, or else in the kitchen doing the same.

Matsuri also offers a wide selection of cooked Japanese meals. From udon noodles to soft-shell crab dinners, just about anyone can find something they'll like. For children, you can get them tori katsu: a light and juicy breaded breast filet with some sweet brown sauce drizzled over the top. This leads us to the tempura. At Matsu, every piece of food is surrounded by some of the lightest, crispest, tastiest tempura you'll ever be privileged to eat.

Review From "Sacramento Eats" magazine, June 24 2007 "It's so good, it beats out most of the San Francisco-area sushi places we've tried."
