Analyzing web sites
URL: http://www.paulwyatt.co.uk/site08/
Site name: Paul Wyatt Designer
======== Visual Layout ========
Describe the visual elements on the home page. What caught your eye first?
The first thing that cause my eye was the smart drop down letters of designer's name as web site opened up.
How does the graphic design (balance, emphasis, color, tone, and so on) communicate the content?
I think the balance of the site name with image of file cabinet and strong white letters for navigation menu is clean and simplistic but communicates it is a site that will deliver information.
If there are images on the page, do they add value to the content, or are they for decoration and appeal? If they add value, describe how.
I think they add value in the sense that it's a file cabinet, but it in itself is not descriptive of an "artists" web site, except for the "tag" hanging from the designers name stating it is a "portfolio".
How quickly did the page draw? Was it worth the wait?
The page had an intro animation that lasted about 6-7 seconds, which was pleasantly executed, but the ending, or the final home page layout was less spectacular.
How well does the layout of text help viewers understand the main points of the site content?
I believe layout of the text is very clear and to the point as to what information the site will have.
======== Consistency Structures ========
Are any of the elements repeated on subsequent pages? Are the elements decorative or part of the navigation?
Only
part of the an element on the main page is repeated and is part of the navigation back to the home page. However the rest of the pages have similar elements and they all go thru a 3-4 second animated transition which are kind of fun, but are not related except for they all in volve motion of the file cabinet exiting. The entry into the new page however is very consistent
Does the repetition help or hinder the overall purpose of the web site?
I believe the repetition helps because it displays a an array of images and invites user interactivity that then display or run images short animations.
How consistent is the placement of the navigation scheme?
The navigation is consistent only because it depends on one image (menu) that gets clicked on and takes the user back to the home page which is the only page with the full navigation listing
How consistent is the use of color?
The color is simple (on shaded rusty red) and consistent on all the pages except for the about us, which I found distasteful.
How consistent are fonts and font sizes? In what ways do the text styles vary?
The font and font sizes are very consistent with similar lines and blocks related, but not home page or about us page.
======== Color Scheme ========
Does the color scheme add to the purpose or tone of the site?
I don't believe the color scheme adds much purpose to site except maybe an feeling of elegance.
How does the color scheme help or hinder in conveying the purpose of the site?
I think the color scheme helps only to keep the mood somber and focused on context/navigation.
======== Content Bias ========
Can you tell why the site was created? Is there an organization associated with the site, and if, so what type of organization?
Yes... it is clear the site was created to expose the works of the artist. I believe the site was done/created by the artist himself.
Is it clear which portions of the site’s content are fact and which are opinion?
Where most of the pages offer actual existing works, one page is clear on articles authored or co-authored by artist and are articles about or instructional material on graphic design especially use of flash or more current web design advantages.
Is there any bias in the information presented? Is there a hidden purpose?
I don’t believe there is a specific bias other then reasonable ways offered to become successful or organizing one self at graphic design/web page creations... and of course solicitation by example in those fields.
======== Content Currency ========
When was the information first placed on the page?
No evidence or knowledge of how to find (no source code access?) when the information was first placed on the page but right clicking give copyright of 2006. All pages do contain a consistent footnote the all content is copyrighted 2008 by artist.
When was it last revised?
It might be that it was last revised on 1/17/2009 as that shows up in the "properties" when copyrighted line/message is right clicked by mouse.
Are there any other indications that this information is current? What are the quality of the related links?
There is a page that indicates the site is somewhat current because it shows clients in the design/production industry plus sites seen features in current issues of "Computer Arts Projects" magazine.
======== Content Source ========
Who is responsible for this site?
The artist himself looks solely responsible for this web site.
What qualifications or expertise does the author have to write about the topic on this site?
The author/artist has much experience it the field of internet and motion graphics working with some big named companies, and has written form many well know industry magazines, plus has held several Senior design roles within the industry.
Is there a way to verify the legitimacy of the author, such as an e-mail address, phone number, or mailing address?
He does have an address and I would assume it would be simple enough to contact some of the companies he has proclaimed to work with. I myself ran across an article in "Computer Arts Projects" (C.A.P.)magazine where I found the link to his web site.
Who sponsors this site? Has the site been reviewed or won any awards?
There are no companies, advertisements, or other indications that this web site is sponsored by anyone, except for the article in C.A.P. magazine prazing him for his work.
Are any other sources cited on this site?
There are many links to web pages he has created on this site.
What is the domain extension of the site? What does this extension tell you about the site?
I think the .co.uk extension tells me he is from the United Kingdom... not sure what the /site08/ relates too but just typing in www.paulywatt, as the magazine article suggested took me to a Paul Wyatt (furniture) Design Co. rather than his site and had to Google his name before I found the site.
======== Content Corroboration ========
What other sites have information on this topic?
There are literally millions of "web page/motion graphics sites, or at least a combination of the two, but I'm sure mostly dealing with web pages.
