Everone Is An Addict

Humans are bio-mechanical computers. We are programmed with our genes. When we desire something, really it is our genes that desire it. The programming in our genes is decided by evolution and natural selection. The genes that survive are the ones that reproduce and thus is the programming that is passed on.

Since survival is the primary factor for a gene being passed on, it is the programming that has become dominate. Seeking shelter, food, sex, and the means to get them, is really our genetic programming trying to sustain itself. Our genes have a way to manipulate us into doing exactly what it wants: pleasure and pain. These sensations are really chemicals in our brains that reward and punish us for our behaviors, thus increasing the sustainability of our genes.

Due to these chemical motivators everyone ends up being addicted to something. Of course we all know of people addicted to food, sex, and external chemicals, but what most people don't realize is that there are lesser addictions. We get stuck into a cycle of comfortable routines and rituals because we are chemically addicted to it (an addiction to shelter/security). Even the worship of god(s) is an addiction. Ever hear of someone saying they are getting high on god or life? They literally are getting high on the neurotransmitters their brain releases when performing the activity. Adrenaline can also be an addiction when people purposefully put themselves in "fight or flight" situations in order to "feel alive".
