It all began at Victoria University of Wellington, where Bret McKenzie and Jermaine Clement
first met as students studying film. There Bret and Jermaine performed in several groups before
finally forming Flight of the Conchords in 1998.
The group’s first major performance took place at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe earning them a
nomination for a Perrier Award. Following that, they performed at the Melbourne
International Comedy Festival and won the Best Newcomer award. Over time they released
several albums with their humorous songs and one album (The Distant Future) won the
Grammy for best comedy album in 2007.
The group has performed in various venues and has used their unique sense of humor to work
on several commercials in the UK, a BBC radio series that won the Bronze Sony Radio Academy
Award for comedy in 2006, and eventually their HBO show Flight of the Conchords.
